A Stranger Thanked Me for a Stay at My Cottage—Then I Learned It Had Been Listed Without My Knowledge

Posted on July 4, 2026 By admin

The phone call came on a quiet Sunday morning while I was spending the winter with my sister in Florida. A friendly man introduced himself and thanked me for the wonderful stay his family had just enjoyed at my lakeside cottage. He said he had found my name stitched into a handmade quilt and printed in a church newsletter left inside the house. At first, I assumed he had the wrong number. I had owned that cottage for more than six decades, and no one had permission to rent it. Yet he casually mentioned that he had booked the property online under the name “Serene Lakeside Hideaway” and believed I was the owner. Before ending the call, he complimented the location and mentioned that the hot water heater could use some attention. After hanging up, I realized something was seriously wrong.

The cottage had been in my family since the 1960s and held generations of memories. After my husband passed away, my grandson Trevor volunteered to check on the property while I spent winters away. I even paid him each month to make sure everything stayed in good condition. Looking back, I began to remember small details that had never seemed important at the time. He had encouraged me to delay my spring visits, installed a keypad lock that replaced my old key, and always reassured me that everything at the cottage was fine. A neighbor had once mentioned seeing unfamiliar vehicles coming and going, but I assumed Trevor was handling maintenance or helping friends. Instead of confronting anyone immediately, I decided to gather accurate information before drawing conclusions.

After returning home earlier than planned, I contacted the vacation rental platform and provided documentation showing that I owned the property. Following its review process, the company confirmed that a listing matching my cottage had been active for an extended period and temporarily suspended it while the matter was investigated. Local officials also confirmed that no short-term rental permit had been issued for the property. My neighbor kindly shared notes she had kept about unusual activity during the months I was away, which helped establish a timeline. When Trevor arrived expecting another guest turnover, we had a calm but difficult conversation. Faced with the information that had been collected, he acknowledged that he had been renting out the cottage without my knowledge and keeping the proceeds himself.

The situation was eventually resolved through the appropriate legal and financial channels, with arrangements made for repayment and accountability. The unauthorized rental listing was permanently removed, and future bookings were canceled. I replaced the keypad with traditional locks, gave spare keys only to trusted people, and completed repairs that had been delayed during the unauthorized rentals. Trevor has since begun taking responsibility for his actions and continues working toward rebuilding trust. Whether that relationship fully heals will take time. The cottage, however, is once again what it was always meant to be—a place where family gathers, children play by the lake, and memories are made honestly. Some places may have a market value, but the history they hold is beyond any nightly rental price.
