After 22 Years, My Position Was Eliminated—Six Weeks Later, an Unexpected Phone Call Changed My Career

Posted on July 1, 2026 By admin

After more than two decades with Meridian Property Group, I was invited into my manager’s office late on a Friday afternoon and informed that my position was being eliminated as part of a company restructuring. Along with the news came a severance package of $4,800 and sincere wishes for success in the future. Although the conversation was professional, it was difficult to leave behind a workplace where I had spent twenty-two years building relationships, solving problems, and supporting clients. After collecting my belongings and taking a few quiet moments in my car, I made an important phone call to Marcus Webb, a longtime industry colleague who had encouraged me to consider joining Lakeview Commercial Partners on several occasions. When he learned I was available, he immediately welcomed the opportunity to continue our conversations. By the beginning of the following week, I had accepted a new position and was looking ahead to the next chapter of my career.

Throughout my years at Meridian, I specialized in managing long-term commercial real estate relationships. Early in my career, a respected mentor taught me that successful business depends not only on contracts but on trust built consistently over time. That lesson shaped every client relationship I developed, including my work with the Hargrove Family Trust, one of the company’s largest commercial portfolios. Over many years, I worked closely with Eleanor Hargrove and her team, assisting with lease renewals, resolving complex issues, and maintaining regular communication well beyond scheduled meetings. We built a professional relationship based on reliability, responsiveness, and mutual respect. Although many people within the organization were familiar with the account, I had personally managed much of the day-to-day communication for nearly a decade, making those connections one of the most valuable aspects of my professional experience.

Shortly after beginning my new role at Lakeview, I contacted Eleanor to let her know about my career transition. We spoke openly about the changes, and she asked thoughtful questions about the services Lakeview could provide and how client relationships would be managed moving forward. Over the following weeks, her organization carefully evaluated its options and ultimately decided to transfer management of its commercial property portfolio to Lakeview when existing contractual obligations allowed. The decision reflected her confidence in the relationships and service she had experienced over many years rather than any single event. As the transition unfolded, Meridian conducted an internal review of several major client accounts to better understand the factors influencing recent business changes. The review highlighted the importance of long-term relationship management, client communication, and the valuable contributions made by experienced employees throughout the organization.

Today, I continue working with many of the clients I have served throughout my career, including the Hargrove Family Trust. Looking back, I no longer view losing my position as the end of my professional journey but as the beginning of a far more rewarding opportunity. Strong business relationships cannot be created overnight, and they cannot be replaced simply by transferring responsibilities from one person to another. They are built gradually through consistency, trust, and genuine commitment to helping others succeed. That experience reminded me that while job titles and office locations may change, integrity, professionalism, and the confidence people place in you remain your most valuable assets. Sometimes an unexpected career change opens the door to opportunities you never would have pursued otherwise, proving that new beginnings often arrive disguised as difficult endings.
