The phone call came while I was organizing old tools in my garage. Jesse, the young man I had hired to mow my daughter Clara’s lawn while she was away, sounded uncertain. He told me he kept hearing a child crying inside the house, even though Clara had said she was leaving town that morning. Concerned, I grabbed my truck keys and drove over. Something about the situation didn’t feel right, and experience had taught me that it was always better to check than to ignore an uneasy feeling.
My daughter had recently gone through a difficult divorce and was doing everything she could to create a stable life for herself and her two-year-old son, Liam. The months leading up to that day had been filled with legal appointments, parenting schedules, and plenty of stress. Earlier that morning, she had called from the airport to thank me for checking on the house while she was away. When I stopped by before lunch, everything appeared normal, so hearing that someone was inside the home came as a complete surprise.
When I arrived, Jesse was waiting outside. The back door was slightly open, and a few recently purchased groceries sat in the kitchen. We soon heard the crying again, followed by a calm voice comforting a child. Following the sound, I found Clara downstairs with Liam, who had developed a high fever shortly before her scheduled flight. Rather than continue her trip, she had decided to stay home and care for him while also preparing for several important legal meetings related to her family’s situation. In the rush to change her plans, she had forgotten to tell anyone she was no longer traveling, which explained the confusion.
