Twelve days after my husband, Daniel, passed away, I found our neighbor Monica climbing over our fence with two bags of apples and pears. Daniel had spent years caring for those trees. Every September, our eight-year-old son, Ben, followed him through the garden, learning how to recognize ripe fruit. That morning, Ben stood behind me holding his father’s old cap while Monica announced that she needed money and intended to sell what she had picked. When I objected, she dismissed my concerns by saying Daniel was no longer there. I asked her to leave. Before going, she mentioned “one red light twenty-seven years ago”—a detail from my marriage I had never expected her to know.
Daniel and I had met after he accidentally struck me at a crosswalk while driving through a red light. He took me to the hospital and returned the next morning with coffee and an apology. Our relationship grew from there, making Monica’s remark especially unsettling. The following morning, Ben heard noises outside. When I checked the garden, nearly all the fruit was gone. Branches were damaged, a ladder lay nearby, and footprints marked the ground. I photographed everything rather than immediately confronting her. While searching online, I found information about a community market she planned to attend. Then an older photograph caught my attention: Monica and Daniel together before I had known either of them.
When I approached Monica for an explanation, she admitted that she and Daniel had once dated. On the evening of the collision, he had been driving to meet her. Their relationship ended afterward, although she said they had never resumed it during our marriage. Before I could respond, a young man named Luke came outside. I recognized him as someone who had visited her repeatedly that summer, whom I had understood to be a plumber. Luke told me Daniel was his father. Monica explained that she had become pregnant after their relationship ended and had never told Daniel. Luke had learned his father’s identity only three months earlier. He had visited hoping to introduce himself, but Daniel passed away before he found the courage.
