Twenty-Five Years After We Adopted Our Daughter, a Letter Helped Her Understand Her Beginnings

Posted on October 17, 2026 By admin

The letter arrived twenty-five years after Thomas and I brought Lily home. By then, our daughter was building a promising future in medicine, and the hesitant little girl we had first met had become a thoughtful, determined woman. We had always spoken openly about her adoption, sharing what we knew and answering her questions as she grew. Still, there were parts of her early life we could not explain. Reading it meant reconsidering a story we had understood only from the information available when Lily joined our family.

We met Lily after years of infertility had left us longing to become parents. She was five and living in a children’s home, where her large facial birthmark seemed to draw more attention than her personality. Her decision to pursue medicine reflected a desire to help others feel respected and accepted.

In the letter, Lily’s biological mother described fear and pressure that had influenced her decision to place Lily for adoption. She explained that the separation had not come from an absence of love. Those words were painful to absorb because they introduced experiences we had never known about. They also raised questions that a letter alone could not answer. Lily eventually chose to meet her. Their reunion brought emotion, uncertainty, and an opportunity to hear more directly about the past. One conversation could not recover twenty-five years, resolve every feeling, or determine what their relationship would become. It did, however, give Lily another perspective on her beginnings.
