My Daughter Gave Her Classmate a Handmade Dress and a Cherished Cardigan—Then I Learned Why

Posted on October 17, 2026 By admin

At 6:30 one morning, I opened my sixteen-year-old daughter Lily’s bedroom door and found her bed empty. The window was slightly open, and the chrysanthemums beneath it had been flattened. My husband, Daniel, had planted those flowers before he passed away two years earlier. Since then, I had worked extra shifts at the dental office, trying to provide stability while Lily pursued her dream of becoming a fashion designer. She practiced on a secondhand sewing machine Daniel had bought for her. Just days before that unsettling morning, she had stayed up until nearly one o’clock finishing a deep-green dress for her classmate Annie, whose mother could not afford an outfit for the school concert. I had believed it was simply a thoughtful gesture.

Then Lily placed her blue cardigan beside the finished dress. It was Daniel’s last gift to her, a treasured reminder of her father that she sometimes wore to bed when she missed him. I could not understand why she wanted to give it away, but she insisted Annie should have it. The following afternoon, Lily came home with swollen eyes, withdrew to her bedroom, and declined her favorite meal. Early the next morning, Annie and her mother, Marissa, arrived at our door. Annie was wearing the cardigan. Marissa handed me a small box containing a flash drive and asked whether I knew why Lily had made the dress. The recording showed my daughter joining other girls in humiliating Annie—mocking her, emptying her bag, filming her distress, and making unkind remarks about Marissa’s cleaning work. After watching, I hurried upstairs and discovered Lily had left.

Annie thought she might have gone to the train station, so Marissa drove us there. We found Lily on the platform carrying a duffel bag as a train approached. During the conversation that followed, Lily admitted that she and Annie had once been close friends. When Annie confided that her feelings might extend beyond friendship, Lily became frightened about how others would react. After other girls learned about it, she joined their bullying rather than risk being excluded herself. Her fear did not excuse her choices, and hearing her acknowledge them was painful. Then Marissa revealed another connection between our families. Two years earlier, she and Annie had found Daniel after he collapsed outside an office building. They called emergency services and stayed beside him until help arrived. He had asked them to tell his wife and daughter that he loved them.
