My Son Sold My Buick on My Birthday—A Red Tricycle Helped Us Talk About Why

On my seventy-sixth birthday, my son, Brian, reached across the table at a Wisconsin supper club and asked for my car keys. Beside my birthday cake, he placed a cashier’s check for $4,200. He had sold my Buick after I accidentally clipped a neighbor’s mailbox, deciding that I should no longer drive. The car was a 2005 LeSabre my late husband, Walter, had chosen, and I had driven it for eleven years. Brian’s name was also on the title, an arrangement I had trusted would make things easier after losing his father. I handed over the keys quietly, but his decision left me feeling that my judgment no longer mattered.

That evening, I called my friend Wilma and asked her to take me to a bicycle shop the following morning. There, I bought a bright red three-wheeled bicycle for $389, complete with a basket and a little chrome bell. It gave me another way to reach familiar places around town—and a reason to visit Brian’s office. When I arrived after the two-mile ride, he saw me through the window and hurried outside, visibly alarmed. I asked whether he had consulted my doctor, spoken with my eye specialist, or ridden beside me before deciding I was incapable of driving. He had done none of those things.

Over the following weeks, I arranged the assessments myself. My doctor reviewed my health, my eye specialist checked my vision, and a driving instructor evaluated my ability behind the wheel. Their findings supported my continuing to drive at that time. I gathered the reports into a folder and brought them to Brian. I wanted us to discuss evidence rather than argue about my age or rely on a single mistake. As he read the pages, his expression changed. Then he began crying and finally explained why the damaged mailbox had frightened him so deeply.

Eleven years earlier, Brian had witnessed his father lose control of a car on an icy road. Walter had not survived, and Brian had carried guilt about that day ever since. Hearing about my driving mistake brought back his fear of losing another parent. I held his hand while he talked, understanding more clearly what had been behind his actions. I told him his father’s loss was not his fault. I also explained that being frightened for me did not justify selling my car without a conversation. We needed a way to discuss genuine safety concerns while allowing me to participate in decisions about my own life.

Brian bought me another car, and this time the title carried only my name. I also asked him to join our Wednesday cycling group, giving him a chance to share something that had restored my confidence and enjoyment of getting around town. Repairing our relationship required more than replacing the Buick. He needed to listen, and I needed to understand the grief he had kept to himself for years. Now I drive when I choose and use my red tricycle for outings that suit me. Whenever I pass his insurance office, I ring the chrome bell once. Brian looks up and waves, and I continue along my way.
