The Classic Squeeze Coin Purse: A Small Accessory With a Clever Design

Posted on October 14, 2026 By admin

A small, bright-red oval with no zipper, button, or clasp can be puzzling to anyone who has never used a squeeze coin purse. Its smooth, flexible body might suggest a miniature case or a simple toy, yet its purpose was entirely practical: keeping loose change together. For people who remember carrying coins for public telephones, bus fares, parking meters, vending machines, and laundromats, the shape may feel immediately familiar. These compact accessories could slip into a pocket, handbag, glove compartment, or desk drawer, making spare change easier to find when needed. Their appeal came from a design that required very little explanation once someone demonstrated it.

The opening mechanism was built directly into the purse’s rubber or flexible vinyl body. A narrow slit ran across one side, remaining closed while the purse rested in its normal shape. Pressing the ends toward each other made the body bow outward and widened the slit, allowing the owner to reach inside. Releasing that pressure let the material return to its original position, bringing the opening closed again. There was no separate fastener to operate or replace. The purse’s shape and flexibility did the work, turning an ordinary piece of molded material into a useful container for small objects.

Businesses also recognized the purse as a convenient promotional item. Its exterior provided room for a company name, logo, address, or telephone number, while its everyday usefulness gave recipients a reason to keep it. Banks, service stations, insurance agencies, hardware stores, and other businesses distributed versions bearing their advertising. A customer might carry the same purse regularly, seeing the printed name whenever they needed change. Those markings now give surviving examples an additional point of interest. Beyond identifying the business that supplied them, they can offer glimpses of older graphic styles, local services, and the way companies once advertised through inexpensive household accessories.
