Crispy Fried Green Tomatoes: A Classic Southern Favorite Worth Trying

Posted on June 29, 2026 By admin

Fried Green Tomatoes are a timeless Southern favorite known for their satisfying crunch, tangy flavor, and simple preparation. Made with firm, unripe green tomatoes, this classic dish transforms an everyday ingredient into a delicious appetizer, snack, or side that pairs well with countless meals. The tomatoes are coated in a flavorful breading before being fried until perfectly golden, creating a crisp exterior while keeping the inside tender and slightly tart. Their unique balance of texture and flavor has made them a popular recipe passed down through generations. Whether served alongside grilled meats, barbecue, sandwiches, or enjoyed on their own with your favorite dipping sauce, Fried Green Tomatoes are a comforting dish that continues to earn a place on family tables throughout the year.

To prepare this recipe, you’ll need four large green tomatoes, two eggs, one-half cup of milk, one cup of all-purpose flour, one-half cup of cornmeal, one-half cup of bread crumbs, two teaspoons of coarse kosher salt, one-quarter teaspoon of ground black pepper, and approximately one quart of vegetable oil for frying, enough to create a layer about one-half inch deep in your skillet. Begin by washing the tomatoes thoroughly before slicing them into rounds about one-half inch thick, discarding the stem and bottom ends. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until smooth. Place the flour onto a separate plate, then combine the cornmeal, bread crumbs, salt, and black pepper on another plate, mixing everything evenly so each tomato slice receives a consistent coating during the breading process.

To bread the tomatoes, first coat each slice lightly in the flour, ensuring every surface is covered. Next, dip the floured tomato into the egg and milk mixture, allowing any excess liquid to drip away before transferring it to the bread crumb mixture. Press gently so the cornmeal and bread crumbs adhere evenly to both sides. Continue until every tomato slice has been coated. Meanwhile, heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat until it reaches frying temperature. Carefully place four or five breaded tomato slices into the hot oil, depending on the size of your pan, making sure not to overcrowd them. Cooking in small batches helps maintain an even oil temperature and produces a crisp, golden coating on every slice.
