Unusual Tower Along an Oregon Road Reveals a Clever Home-Built Safety Solution

Posted on July 19, 2026 By admin

A unique structure standing beside a quiet rural road near Gresham, Oregon, has sparked curiosity among drivers and visitors alike. Rising about fifteen feet into the air, the narrow tower features beige siding, a small pitched roof, and a glass viewing panel facing the street. At first glance, many people assume it is a decorative treehouse, an oversized birdhouse, or perhaps a small observation tower. However, those who take a closer look soon discover that it serves a surprisingly practical purpose. Local residents have nicknamed it the “driveway periscope” because it helps homeowners safely see approaching traffic before leaving their property. What appears unusual from the outside is actually an inventive solution to a common challenge faced by many people living along narrow rural roads surrounded by trees, hills, and limited visibility.

In many parts of rural Oregon, driveways connect directly to winding roads where dense vegetation and uneven landscapes can block a driver’s view of approaching vehicles. These conditions can make it difficult to enter the roadway safely, especially when traffic appears suddenly around a curve. While some homeowners install large roadside mirrors to improve visibility, one resourceful resident decided to approach the problem differently. Inspired by the same optical principles used in submarine periscopes, the homeowner designed and built a tall viewing tower that provides a clear look at the road without requiring expensive technology or major road modifications. The creative design allows drivers to check traffic conditions before pulling out, offering an extra layer of awareness while blending naturally into the surrounding landscape.

The system itself is surprisingly simple. Near the top of the tower, a carefully positioned mirror captures the view of the roadway beyond the trees and obstacles. A second mirror lower inside the structure reflects that image downward to a viewing window placed at a comfortable eye level for someone standing or sitting nearby. Because the design relies entirely on mirrors and the natural reflection of light, it requires no electricity, cameras, sensors, motors, or electronic equipment. This low-maintenance approach demonstrates how basic scientific principles can solve everyday problems in a reliable and affordable way. By combining straightforward geometry with practical construction, the homeowner created a durable solution that continues to function without complicated maintenance or ongoing operating costs.
